A Satyagraha took place in the Champaran district of Bihar in 1917 under the leadership of Gandhi Ji. It is known as Champaran Satyagraha. It was the first Satyagraha in India under Gandhi Ji's leadership.

Champaran farmer movement

The peasant movement of Champaran took place in April 1917. Gandhi made the first use of Satyagraha and non-violence in South Africa on the land of Champaran in India. 

Here, he also decided that he would live on only one cloth from the front. After this movement, he was conferred with the title of 'Mahatma'. 

The country also got great personalities like Rajendra Prasad, Acharya Kripalani, Mazharul Haq, Brajkishore Prasad from this movement.

It can be understood from these facts that how important the Champaran movement is in the political history of the country. It was from this movement that the country got confidence in getting a new leader and a new kind of politics.

The Indigo revolt (or Nil bidroha)

Thousands of landless laborers and poor farmers were forced to cultivate indigo and other cash crops instead of food grains. There was a lot of persecution of indigo cultivators.

There was a lot of exploitation from the British. Some garden owners were also indulging in oppression from above.

Mahatma Gandhi arrived there on 14 April 1917 at the invitation of Rajkumar Shukla to take stock of the status of indigo farmers of Champaran, Bihar.

Thousands of people gathered to see him. The farmers stated all their problems. The police also got into action. The police superintendent ordered Gandhiji to leave the district. 

Gandhiji refused to obey the order. The next day Gandhiji was to appear in court. Thousands of farmers gathered outside the court. Slogans were being raised in support of Gandhiji. 

Seeing the seriousness of the situation, the magistrate ordered Gandhiji to be released without bail. But Gandhiji demanded punishment according to the law.

The decision was postponed. Successfully led his first Satyagraha movement, now his first aim was to introduce people to the basic principles of 'Satyagraha'. 

He has the first condition to achieve freedom - to be independent of fear. Gandhiji sent many of his volunteers among the farmers. Rural schools were opened here to educate the children of farmers.

People were taught how to live cleanly. All the activities matched Gandhi Ji's conduct. The British government was disturbed by this Gandhi campaign in Champaran. 

The focus of all India was now on Champaran. The government was forced to appoint an inquiry commission and Gandhi Ji was also made its member. The result was in front.

All wrong practices were abolished by making laws. The indigo cultivators now became the owners of their land for the benefit of the zamindar. 

Gandhi Ji blew the conch of the first victory of Satyagraha in India. Champaran became the birthplace of Satyagraha in India.

Things related to Champaran Satyagraha these days

On the centenary of the Champaran Satyagraha movement, the government has started schemes related to cleanliness in Bihar. 

Sewerage Protects have been started in this state. For this project, she will give Rs 1,000 crore. Apart from this, many programs have also been organized in this state, which is related to cleanliness.
